Keemon Williams (b. 1999) is a queer interdisciplinary Meanjin (Brisbane) based artist of Koa, Kuku Yalanji and Meriam Mir descent. He utilises a diverse range of mediums and performative elements to interrogate the relationships between location, personal history and the manifestation of culture in a postcolonial world. His practice seeks to critically examine facets of his identity and its intrinsic tethering to the wider context of being “Australian.” These works consider the commercial production of mass-produced tourist merchandise, their construction of Australian ‘national identity’, and associated ideas of value, authenticity and cultural plasticity. The words are a form of concrete poetry. Some of them seem the imperatives of the critical society, others softer and more hopeful. Williams has held solo exhibitions at NorthSite Contemporary Arts, Cairns (2023); CARPARK, Brisbane (2023) and Kuiper Projects, Brisbane (2021).
