My mission is to challenge the status quo of treatment of patients with head and neck cancer and complex airway disease. My vision is for a health system which provides world class care to both private and public patients regardless of whether they live in urban or regional parts of Australia. My strategy is to build the most measurably robust Head and Neck Cancer Service in NSW which focusses beyond short term treatment outcomes to long term quality of life for patients and their loved ones. This requires a commitment to patient care, clinical excellence, research and clinical trials, and raising awareness of the HPV related oropharyngeal cancer epidemic.
DEMONSTRATED ACHIEVEMENT
Surgical techniques
- Australia’s highest volume individual transoral (TORS) on the da Vinci platform.
- Introduced transoral robotic surgery to NSW (TORS) by establishing St Vincent’s Sydney TORS Program.
- Pioneered the use of flexible video nasolaryngoscopy in Australian consulting rooms.
- One of the few surgeons in Australia to perform advanced airway reconstruction in adults.
Surgical education and training
- Revised the training curriculum for Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgical Education and Training (SET) program while National Board Chair.
- Founder of first sinus surgery advanced surgical training course in Australia to use fresh frozen cadavers.Founder of St Vincent’s Head and Neck Dissection Advanced Surgical Training Course.
Cancer Services
- First Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgeon to hold position of Director of Cancer Services.
- Rebuilt St Vincent’s oncology services after the 2015 chemotherapy under dosing scandal to achieve 2018 NSW Premier’s Award for Outstanding Clinical Trials Unit.
- Developed St Vincent’s Telehealth, a model now used across NSW.
- Creator of first Australian off-site free head and neck cancer screening clinic, Bankwest Stadium.
- Founder of the St Vincent’s Head and Neck Cancer and Airway Reconstruction Fund.
